A framework for knowing where you actually stand
GEO progress is not a binary — you are not simply "optimised" or "not optimised." There are five distinct levels of AI readiness, and the gap between each level represents a different class of problem to solve. Understanding which level you are on tells you what the next concrete step is, without wasting effort on work that belongs to a later level.
L0 to L2: from invisible to retrievable
L0 is the floor: AI crawlers are blocked by robots.txt, all content is JavaScript-rendered, or the domain is so new it has no crawl history at all. The model has never heard of you. L1 means you are technically crawlable and your content can reach an AI index — but you have no meaningful presence in training data and earn no citations in practice. L2 is the first meaningful milestone: your site is regularly crawled, your HTML is readable, and you occasionally appear in AI answers for branded queries where the model already knows your name. Most sites that have done basic SEO work sit at L1 or low L2.
L3 to L4: from citable to transactable
L3 means you are reliably cited for category-level queries — not just when someone searches your brand name, but when they ask which brand to buy for a given use case. Reaching L3 requires established entity presence (Wikipedia, Wikidata, consistent knowledge-graph mentions), well-structured content that models trust, and consistent authority signals across the web. L4 is the frontier: your brand is not just cited but actionable — a shopping agent can complete a purchase, book a demo, or configure a product on your behalf without any human navigating your site.
Using the ladder as a diagnostic, not a score
The readiness ladder is most useful as a diagnostic tool: it tells you which class of investment is blocking your next level. A site at L0 does not need better content — it needs access fixed first. A site at L2 does not need more technical fixes — it needs entity authority built. Working at the wrong level is the most common way to spend months on GEO work that produces no measurable improvement in AI citation presence.
